Perennial flower gardens in the North have amazing tenacity. They withstand freezing winters, hot dry summers, and stand their ground when the rocky landscape tries to take over.
In this scene from my garden, I love the contrast of bright spiky flowers against the subdued hues of the round river stones. I grew up near Algonquin Park and never tire of painting the rocks of the Canadian Shield.
